Practical Zakat guidance

Who must pay Zakat, and when is it not due?

Whether Zakat is due depends on eligible ownership, nisab, timing and the applicable scholarly rules.

The quick answer

Whether Zakat is due depends on eligible ownership, nisab, timing and the applicable scholarly rules. Wealth below the chosen threshold does not generate a standard annual wealth liability. Children’s wealth and wealth belonging to someone lacking capacity are areas where the schools differ.

Below nisab or before the relevant anniversary

First assess eligible assets and permitted liabilities. Compare the result with the threshold used by your chosen method and valuation date. A fixed pound figure quoted for an old month cannot decide present eligibility. For assets subject to hawl, establish the relevant lunar-year condition too.

Children and people lacking capacity

The Hanafi approach generally treats the personal obligation differently from the majority approach, which may require a guardian to pay from qualifying wealth. Do not assume a child’s investment account is always exempt, or that a guardian must always pay, without identifying the relevant ruling and ownership.

Assets used for ordinary living

A home used as a residence, a personal-use vehicle and ordinary household items are generally excluded from annual eligible wealth. Cash saved for a future purchase is a separate matter: a plan to buy a home does not automatically convert that cash into an exempt residence.

A short decision checklist

  • Who owns the asset?
  • Is this type of asset eligible under the method followed?
  • What deductions are permitted?
  • Does net eligible wealth meet the applicable nisab?
  • Have the relevant timing conditions been met?

Unemployment, retirement or having a low salary does not alone answer every question if a person owns substantial eligible assets.
