# Zakat on silver: bullion, jewellery and purity

Silver held as wealth can be zakatable. Value the eligible silver and combine it with other assets according to your chosen method. This site uses a silver nisab weight of 612.36g; another recognised convention uses 595g. Personal-use jewellery and other silver items can have school-specific treatment.

## Check weight and purity

Use a reliable metal weight, excluding stones and non-silver fittings. Sterling silver marked 925 contains approximately 92.5% silver. Fine silver marked 999 contains approximately 99.9%. A dealer’s current resale valuation may be more appropriate than a retail receipt for a finished item.

## Calculate a silver value

500g of sterling silver contains 500 × 0.925 = 462.5g fine silver. At an illustrative £1 per fine gram, its metal value is £462.50.

That value is combined with other eligible assets where the chosen method requires it. It is not automatically exempt just because the silver’s weight alone is below a standalone threshold.

## Use a dated price for nisab

The GBP threshold equals the selected fine-silver price per gram multiplied by the chosen nisab weight. It is not a fixed annual pound amount. Our price service identifies the provider’s date and refuses to replace unavailable prices with an old “live” figure.

## Coins, collectables and personal items

Collector premiums, unusual alloys, personal-use jewellery and silverware may require a method beyond a simple fine-metal estimate. If you trade these items, consider the business inventory rules. Keep the purpose, ownership and valuation source in your records.
