Inherited wealth may become part of your Zakat assessment once the relevant ownership and control conditions are met. It does not always receive a separate full lunar year if you already have an established anniversary. The nature of the inherited asset and the method you follow both matter.

## Confirm what you own and when

An anticipated inheritance, an estate still being administered and money already received are different situations. Record the distribution documents, the asset received and the date you obtained the relevant ownership and access. Do not use the date of death as an automatic answer for every case.

## Consider the kind of asset

Inherited cash, gold, business assets and property can have different treatment. A home you use personally is not assessed like cash merely because you inherited it. Property held for rent differs from property held as trading stock. Follow the asset’s use and ownership rather than the word “inheritance” alone.

## Join an existing assessment where appropriate

Under the Hanafi approach, additional cash can join your existing annual assessment. It is therefore too broad to state that all inherited money is always exempt until one full year after receipt. If this is your first eligible wealth, the start of a hawl may be relevant instead.

## Example and records

A person with an existing anniversary receives £5,000 cash before that date and still owns it on the date. If their method includes it in the existing assessment, it joins other eligible cash. Where the overall conditions are met, its attributable Zakat is £125.

Unpaid Zakat of someone who has died is a separate estate question. Obtain specific advice rather than mixing the deceased’s liability with the beneficiary’s own calculation.
