Gold held as wealth can be subject to Zakat when the relevant conditions are met. The Hanafi approach generally includes gold jewellery used personally; other Sunni schools generally exempt permissible personal-use jewellery subject to their conditions. Choose the ruling you follow, then value the gold using reliable weight and purity information.

## Start with ownership and purpose

Include gold you own, whether stored at home or elsewhere. A borrowed item is not yours merely because you wear it. For gifts, establish whether ownership has actually transferred. Gold held for resale belongs in the business or trading assessment.

Do not describe the inclusion of all personal-use jewellery as a majority ruling across Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools. There are meaningful differences, including conditions concerning permitted use and excess. Ask a qualified scholar if your items or school’s treatment are unclear.

## Use the metal’s current value

A jeweller’s resale valuation can be useful. Retail purchase prices often include design work, stones and margins, so they are not necessarily the current value of the gold content. If valuing by weight, separate the metal weight from stones and non-gold components.

The fine-gold fraction is carat divided by 24. For example, 22ct is 22 ÷ 24, approximately 91.67%; 18ct is 75%. This is a valuation calculation, not a substitute for any school-specific rule about alloys or the nisab of gold held alone.

## A gold valuation example
Worked example · illustrative figures
Suppose you own 60g of 22ct gold and use an illustrative pure-gold price of £100 per gram. Fine gold = 60 × 22 ÷ 24 = 55g; estimated metal value = £5,500.

If you also have £4,000 eligible cash, combined assets before debts are £9,500. Where the chosen nisab and hawl conditions are met, attributable Zakat on the gold component would be £5,500 × 0.025 = £137.50. £100/g is an example, not today’s quote.

## Grams, tola and bhori

Use grams from a reliable receipt or scale whenever possible. This calculator uses 1 tola = 11.664g and the same approximate convention for bhori/bori. Local usage and rounding can vary; confirm the gram weight with your jeweller rather than relying solely on a unit name.

For the nisab convention used here, 7.5 tola is 87.48g. Other recognised conventions use 85g. Follow a coherent threshold and valuation method instead of mixing weights from different approaches.

## Combine holdings without double-counting

The gold-only value is one part of your financial assessment. Whether gold below its standalone threshold combines with cash or silver depends on the method you follow. Our general calculator combines GBP asset values and offers silver or gold nisab. Read its assumptions before applying it to unusual gold-only or low-purity holdings.

## Common questions

### Do I use the price I paid for jewellery?
Use a supported valuation for your Zakat date. Purchase price can include making charges and stones which do not represent today’s gold value.
### Is worn jewellery always exempt?
No. Personal-use jewellery is an area of scholarly difference. The calculator includes it under its Hanafi default.
