Separate existing debts, future expenses and long-term repayments before reducing your eligible wealth.

Some liabilities can reduce the amount on which Zakat is assessed, but the rules differ between scholars. Do not subtract every future expense or the full balance of a long-term mortgage or student loan. Identify what is actually payable, separate interest from principal, and follow one consistent approach.

## Start with what is already owed

Prepare a list of existing unpaid bills, tax liabilities, credit balances and personal loans on your assessment date. Record their due dates and which amounts you have already included elsewhere. A bill for something already supplied is different from next year’s living budget.

The calculator accepts amounts you have established as deductible. It does not decide the legal or religious status of a debt based on the label you type.

## A published approach to long-term debts

NZF permits consideration of up to 12 lunar months of qualifying principal repayments, while advising against the deduction where paying Zakat would not affect the ability to make those repayments. It excludes interest and future bills not yet due. This is a specific published approach, rather than a claim of agreement across all schools.

Other approaches focus on currently due instalments or treat debt deductions differently. Your financial circumstances and the contract matter. Ask for guidance before using a large deduction that would remove your entire Zakat liability.

## Do not confuse an outstanding balance with a payment due
Worked example · illustrative figures
Suppose you hold £9,000 of eligible assets and have £600 in existing qualifying bills. Your net amount before any other approved deduction is £8,400.

A mortgage statement also shows £150,000 outstanding. That figure is not automatically deducted in full. If your chosen method permits a further £1,400 of principal repayments in your circumstances, the assessed balance becomes £7,000. If it does not, it remains £8,400. Compare the relevant balance with current nisab before applying 2.5%.

## Student loans and income-linked repayments

A UK income-contingent student loan is not generally payable in full on demand merely because a balance appears on a statement. Identify any required repayments relevant to your assessment. A blanket statement that every student loan balance is deductible, or that no repayment can ever be deductible, is too broad.

Repayments already taken from wages have already reduced your bank balance. Deducting them again would count the same outflow twice.

## Money owed to you is the opposite side

Recoverable loans you made and business receivables can form part of your assets. A doubtful or disputed debt needs separate consideration. Record who owes it, whether it is recoverable, and how you have treated it. Do not silently write off a debt merely to lower your calculation.

## Common questions

### Can I deduct next year’s rent?
Future expenses that have not been incurred are not automatically debts. Separate rent already owed from a budget for future months.
### Can my debts make the result negative?
The calculator floors net eligible wealth at zero. A negative arithmetic balance is not a credit against another person’s Zakat.
