Start by identifying the eligible wealth you own, the relevant nisab and when your Zakat anniversary begins under the guidance you follow. Becoming Muslim does not mean every possession becomes zakatable. You can learn the essentials and seek help for personal questions without mastering every asset rule at once.

## Make a simple asset list

Begin with cash, savings, any gold or silver and investments. Separate a personal home, ordinary belongings and other excluded assets. If you own complex business or pension assets, note them for a more detailed assessment rather than guessing.

## Establish timing

Record your circumstances at the start of your Muslim life, including whether you owned the relevant nisab. Ask a qualified scholar to help establish the first anniversary and the treatment of earlier obligations or unusual assets. Avoid using an old fixed GBP threshold.

## Choose a method you can follow consistently

Different schools have recognised differences. The calculator states its defaults, including personal jewellery and silver nisab, but does not choose your religious school. Use a trusted source and ask when a difference changes your circumstances.

## A manageable first calculation

Work through the [step-by-step guide](https://www.zakat-calculator.org.uk/how-to-calculate-zakat), record the date and values, then review the result. Zakat, voluntary Sadaqah and Fitrana are separate forms of giving. You can use this website without making a donation.
