Understand Fitrana, the per-person assessment and why it is separate from annual wealth Zakat.

[Calculate your Zakat →](https://www.zakat-calculator.org.uk/zakat-calculator) The quick answer
Zakat al-Fitr, also called Fitrana, is a Ramadan obligation assessed per eligible person and intended for distribution before the Eid prayer. It is separate from the 2.5% calculation for annual wealth. Food measures, cash payment and payer eligibility have school-specific rules; use your trusted mosque or provider’s current guidance.

## Use the rate for the relevant year

A provider’s GBP amount reflects its food measure, costs and distribution method. It is not a universal fixed religious price. Confirm the published rate for the year and the number of people for whom you are responsible under your school’s guidance.

## Multiply people by the chosen rate
Worked example · illustrative figures
For an illustrative rate of £5 per person and four qualifying people, the total is 4 × £5 = £20. At a £7 rate, it would be £28. These numbers demonstrate arithmetic; neither amount is presented here as the correct rate for every provider.

## Allow time for distribution

When giving through an organisation, its collection deadline may be earlier than the Eid prayer so food or funds can reach recipients on time. Paying a website at the last moment is not automatically equivalent to completed distribution.

Confirm the Eid date with your local community. Predicted dates and moon-sighting decisions can differ. For earlier years, use the relevant historical date and rate rather than a future prediction.

## Keep Fitrana separate from wealth Zakat

Record Fitrana with its own intention and recipient process. Do not reduce your calculated annual wealth Zakat by a payment made for a different obligation. Dependants, children and cash-versus-food questions should be checked against the school you follow.
